APA 7 · MLA 9 · Spoken quotes
How to cite an Instagram Reel.
Record who posted the video and when. Format the original post as a source, then check any spoken quote against the audio.
Save these source details
- 01Creator name and @handle
- 02Original publication date
- 03Post caption or video title
- 04Direct Reel or video URL
Quoting speech? Also note the verified time in the original video.
The short answer: cite the original Instagram post using the format required by your assignment. Include an in-text citation as well as the full reference. If you quote the audio, verify the words and add a time marker so a reader can find the passage.
Start at the original post.
Open the individual Reel or video post. Save its direct link rather than the creator's profile or an audio page. Use the account that published the post to identify the source, and confirm the creator's name instead of guessing it from a handle.
Read the publication date and written caption on Instagram. The caption is the creator's description beneath the post; it may differ from subtitles and spoken words. A speech transcript does not collect the author, date, or caption for you.
Fictional example used throughout this guide
- Creator
- Maya Rivera, @mayarivera
- Published
- October 2, 2026
- Post caption
- Three ways to keep your notes organized
- Direct URL
https://www.instagram.com/reel/REEL_ID/
The person and post are illustrative. Replace every example field, including REEL_ID, with details from the source you actually viewed.
If you need help distinguishing the caption, visible text, and audio, use the guide to copying Reel text.
Cite an Instagram Reel in APA 7.
Use the creator or organization name followed by the account handle, then the full publication date. For the title, use up to the first 20 words of the written post caption in italics, followed by [Video]. Finish with Instagram and the direct post URL.
This applies the official APA Instagram video format to a Reel.
Reference list · Fictional example
Rivera, M. [@mayarivera]. (2026, October 2). Three ways to keep your notes organized [Video]. Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/reel/REEL_ID/
For a general reference to the video in your writing, use (Rivera, 2026), or introduce the creator in prose: Rivera (2026). A direct spoken quote also needs its location, as shown below.
Use the original post's date, not the day you generated a transcript. Copy the caption from the post itself; do not replace it with the opening sentence of the audio.
Cite an Instagram Reel in MLA 9.
Start with the creator. Identify the video using its title or a concise factual description if it has no formal title. Then give Instagram as the container, the publication date, and the direct URL. A description you supply is not placed in quotation marks.
See the MLA Style Center's Instagram video example.

Rivera, Maya [@mayarivera]. Video explaining three ways to organize notes. Instagram, 2 Oct. 2026, www.instagram.com/reel/REEL_ID/. Accessed 13 Oct. 2026.
The access date records when you viewed the source. MLA recommends an access date for social posts whose text may change; keep it alongside the original publication date. Follow any additional requirements from your instructor or publisher.
Attach a spoken quote to its time.
A full reference identifies the post. An in-text citation points a reader to the statement you discuss. Replay the passage and record where it begins in the original video, rather than relying on the position of a line in a text file.
APA spoken quote
“Keep each project in its own notebook” (Rivera, 2026, 0:12).
MLA spoken quote
“Keep each project in its own notebook” (Rivera 00:12).
The wording and times above are fictional. APA uses the start time of an audiovisual quotation; MLA links an in-text citation to its works-cited entry and relevant location.
Confirm who is speaking, especially in interviews or reposted clips. Keep your paraphrase separate from a verbatim quote. A cleaned-up summary should not appear inside quotation marks as if the speaker used those exact words.
Use a transcript to check the words.
For an accessible public Reel or video post, generate the spoken text below, then compare it with the original audio. The tool returns the speech transcript; it does not build citations or extract post metadata. Video access, detectable speech, and returned timing determine what is available.

Public Reels and video posts
Use Copy or TXT for your notes and keep the source URL beside them. Verify the time in the original video before quoting. For the basic workflow, follow the video transcription steps; for file formats, see the transcript download guide.
Questions about citing Instagram Reels
Can I cite an Instagram Reel in APA?
Yes. Use the Instagram video reference format: the creator or group name and handle, publication date, the opening words of the post caption, a Video label, Instagram, and the direct post URL. Add an in-text citation where you discuss the source.
Do I cite the original Reel or the transcript generator?
For a statement or spoken quote from the video, cite the original Instagram post and check it yourself. A generated transcript helps locate the words but is not the original publication. If your work studies the generated transcript itself, follow your instructor's requirements for that separate source.
What if the post caption differs from what the speaker says?
Keep them separate. In an APA reference, use up to the first 20 words of the written post caption as the title. A spoken quotation belongs in your own text, with the creator, year, and verified start time. Do not substitute the transcript for the post caption.
Can I quote an automatic transcript without checking the video?
Review it against the original audio first. Speech recognition can mishear names, numbers, or short phrases. Confirm both the wording and the speaker, and label a paraphrase as a paraphrase rather than placing rewritten words in quotation marks.
What if the transcript has no usable timestamps?
Locate the passage in the original video and note its start time yourself. Do not invent a time from the text or treat a transcript line number as a video time. TXT and Copy remain useful for reviewing words when timed subtitle exports are unavailable.
